Hooping FAQS

Frequently Asked Questions

HOOPNOTICA® HOOPS

How are Hoopnotica® Hoops different from toy hoops?

Hoopnotic Hoops are slightly bigger, a little heavier, and a whole lot prettier than kids lightweight toy hoops. They help beginners keep their momentum going for a great cardiovascular workout. As your skill improves, the weight helps to maintain control of your movement and build muscle tone.

Can I Hoopdance with my kid's plastic hoop?

You could try* although we don't recommend it. If you discover that it is a lot more difficult than you "remember" it being, keep this in mind: Really it is not the act of hooping that has become more challenging, it's that you are a lot bigger than you used to be.

*If you are working on your own with our DVDs, then the choice is yours. However, you will need to purchase a Hoopnotica® Hoop to take our classes. Feel free to contact us if you have any questions.

How can I care for my Hoopnotica® Hoop?

Your Hoopnotica® Hoop is very durable and while used properly will give you years of Hooping. The decorative tape on your Hoop is not indestructible however and can wear down if you drop your hoop repeatedly on hard surfaces. We recommend that if you are a beginner - to hoop on grass or carpet and stay away from walls, coffee tables, or concrete. It is not uncommon for your first hoop to become a bit torn with love and we often find that customers will buy 2 hoops- 1 for show and 1 for learning new moves.

back-to-top-btn

Are your hoops weighted?

Hoopnotica® Hoops are heavier than regular toy hoops due to their size and decoration. Our hoops are not "weighted". We do not recommend weighted hoops for Hoopdancing as they can be uncomfortable to use.

back-to-top-btn

Hoopnotic TravelHoops® are adjustable for petite adult use:

  • Full size w/ 6 segments: 1.5 lbs, 44" in diameter
  • Adjusted size w/5 segments: 1.1 lbs, 37" in diameter

HOOPNOTICA® HOOPDANCE

How do I get started?

If you have never tried Hoopdance before, start with the 1st DVD in our instructional series, Hoopnotica® Hoopdance Beginning Level. Our DVDs are a great way to learn at your own pace. There is even a troubleshooting section to help you when you are not "quite getting it". You can also jump into a Beginning Level Class in your area! If you've done some hooping and are not sure of your level, contact us and we'll help you determine it.

You will need a Hoopnotica® Hoop to take the classes. A child's hoop from the toy store is not appropriate for these classes. If you do not already have one, you will need to purchase one from our selection at class, or pre-order one. Feel free to contact us if you have any questions.

back-to-top-btn

What can I expect from my first time with your DVD's or first class?

Get ready to laugh, sweat and have some fun! Our teachers will take you through the curriculum step by step, at your own pace. Before you know it, you will be moving gracefully, and incorporating your own style. No matter what your level, you are sure to get a great cardiovascular workout. So have a bottle of water nearby, because you are going to need it.

back-to-top-btn

What should I wear?

Hoopnotica® Hoopdance is all about movement and your clothing should allow freedom for that. We have found that the best thing to hoop in is stretchy jeans, yoga pants, or other natural fiber material. Slim fitting sleeveless tops are essential for upper body work as bare skin is nature's best grip. Try not to wear synthetics such as nylon or rayon, as the hoop tends to slip, making the learning process more difficult.

How do I find a class in my area?

A full schedule of our Hoopnotica® Hoopdance classes can be found on the Classes page. You can purchase your classes there. If you do not see a class in your area, make sure you are signed up on our mailing list for updates and get started with our  Beginning Hooping DVD series! HOOP & HOOPDANCE HISTORY:

How are Hoopdance and Hula Hooping related?

Some people think of Hoopdance as "Hula Hooping". Although Hoopdance has its roots in "Hula Hooping", they are stylistically different. The concepts are similar: the manipulation of a circular piece of tubing around the body in a rhythmic motion, using centrifugal force to keep the hoop "up". Hoopdance is also referred to as "Hooping". Hoopdance takes the "Hula Hoop" craze of the 50's to a new level.

The name "Hula Hoop" was a term trademarked by Wham-O in the 1950's. Although they were the first to introduce the "craze" to the United States, the fundamentals of Hooping have been around for thousands of years.

back-to-top-btn

What are the origins of Hoopdance?

Hooping has been tracked as far back as ancient Egyptian times. Children made hoops from dried grape vines and would swing them around their waists, and thus, Hooping was born.

The Ancient Greeks used Hooping for weight loss, and in the 1400's hooping became popular in England. Hoops have been made from every sort of material from wood to metal and have varied in size.

back-to-top-btn

What is Native American Hoopdance?

Traditional Native American Hoopdance is completely different from what we refer to as Hoopdance today. Originally Native American medicine men and spiritual leaders performed dances with hoops for medicinal and/or visionary purposes. It was thought that visions could be seen through the hoops in order to find a way to cure ailments or see into the future. As this evolved, the dancers learned to utilize these concepts in their own interpretive movement: to weave the story of how all living things on the earth are connected and how they grow and change.

Native American Hoop dancers use dozens of small lightweight hoops. They are commonly made of plastic, but were traditionally made of reeds. The multi-colored hoops represent the creatures found in nature and/or the elements, and are spun in progression to tell a story. Different dancers lend their own interpretations, but each follows the theme of "harmony with nature". For example, the dancers may imitate the form and movement of an eagle, a snake, a butterfly, the wind, or rain, using the hoops to emphasize their form and movement.

How has Modern Hoopdance developed?

Hooping has made its way "back around" into popular culture, with new momentum and a new "spin"; Hoopdance incorporates elements of belly dance, hip-hop, and rhythmic gymnastics. We at Hoopnotica® can trace our collective hooping experience back to one individual, and so we credit Anah "Hoopalicious" as the "Mother of Modern Hoopdance". She was featured on "America's Got Talent", and is an amazing performer. Other performers who are noteworthy include KJ, who can be seen "fire hooping" in a Justin Timberlake video, and Karis who was recently featured in a Scissor Sisters video.

To talk about Hoopdance without mentioning the band "the String Cheese Incident", would be unfortunate. The band's love of Hoopdance inspires them to throw hoops out into the audience every time they perform, inviting concert goers to Hoopdance to their music. Their "Hoop Crossing" sign has become a piece of guerilla-style graffiti art associated with the band.

Today you can find hoops and sometimes Wave Hoops (water filled) in toy stores everywhere. Adults will often try to "reconnect" using the child's toy, remembering the craze they enjoyed in their youth. Unfortunately, the experience lends itself to false promise, as the toy hoops are designed for smaller bodies. Hoopnotica® supplies Hoops made for adults; they are larger and heavier, and most adults are surprised to find how easy they are to use.

back-to-top-btn

How has the Hoop evolved?

All over the world, small companies have attempted to "redefine" the simple child's toy which helped to define a generation. As the demand to "take your hoop on the go" increased, the need for a collapsible hoop increased. Hoopers fashioned hoops for travel in many ways: some taped together, some coiled, and some segmented hoops held together by a bungee cord. The Hoopnotic TravelHoop® is the first of its kind; a segmented hoop that can be easily made smaller to fit a petite adult, is as beautiful as many full-size hoops, and stores easily for travel (as compact as a yoga mat). As an added bonus, the patent-pending TravelHoop has a special tape that provides the extra grip necessary for beginners.

Fire Hooping acts can be found alongside other pyrotechnics such as fire dancing and fire eating. For those less inclined to play with fire, LED hoops can be found and we now have some for sale here on the site.
